Search
Use the fields to the left to search for images by their keywords, descriptions or image numbers. These fields are used to search through all images in the on-line collection.
Note we have 180,000 images in addition to those you can see here, so contact us for more information.
Keyword searches
For most purposes, keyword searches are the most effective. Start typing and a drop down list will show you keywords that exist within the collection. You can also type parts of words to find corresponding keywords.
Add keyword fields by clicking the + sign. This allows you to perform 'AND' searches on the keywords, thereby narrowing your search, e.g. 'beef AND calf' will find beef calves only.
Description searches
Type in a word or sequence of words to find images that contain those exact items in their descriptons. For example 'blue' finds images with blue mentioned in the description field. Similarly, 'endandered species' finds images whose description contains these exact same words with a space between. You can also search on parts of words, e.g. 'swim' will find descriptions containing the word swim or swimming and 'imming' might find swimming, skimming, etc.
Image number searches
Type in a known image number, or any part of it, to find the corresponding image(s).
Combining searches
Use AND between two or more different types of fields to perform more specific searches. Use OR between two or more fields to perform more general searches. For example, using keyword contains 'insects' AND description contains 'antenna', finds images of insects where antenna is mentioned in the description.

Browse by category
Use 'Browse by category' topics to find images based on our alphabetical list of themes. There are two main types of themes listed: 1. taxonomic — groups of images based on their taxonomic classification, e.g. insects, mammals, algae, etc. and 2. discipline based — groups of images relating to a particular field such as horticulture, biological control, geology, etc.
Search results
Once you have found an image you can click on its thumbnail (or click More) to see a larger Preview version. Click on Add to place it in your Lightbox. If the image is already in your lightbox you can click on Remove to delete it from the lightbox.
Detailed preview
The large Preview gives more detail of the image including its description and keywords. You can click on any of the keywords to find related images. Click on Add to place the image in your Lightbox. If the image is already in your lightbox, click Remove to delete it.
Click on the email address to make enquiries or place orders.
Lightbox
Use your Lightbox to hold images while researching what you might need. Click on Remove to remove an image from your Lightbox. The whole Lightbox can be emptied by clicking 'Empty your lightbox'. Reduce, enlarge or hide your Lightbox by clicking the icons in the top right corner. The lightbox can also be dragged anywhere on the screen. If the lightbox is not visible you may have positioned it low down within the window. Either scroll down to find it, or double click 'Lightbox' in the top green bar which will cause the lightboxt to re-open at the top of the screen. Images remain in your Lightbox from session to session.
